While from the front This Old House looks unassuming but behind those covered windows is some amazing food. The miso soup and gyoza were especially delicious. Our server was attentive and helpful but not overbearing. Service was quick and friendly. After trying a few sushi rolls every one tasted fresh and delicious. The only complaint I had was that too many rolls have cream cheese as an ingredient but there's still quite a few without and each one we tried was perfect.

God, where do I start?! This place is a little hole in the wall with the best sushi I've had in the 757. The waitress made some great recommendations and even gave a us a surprise roll based on our preferences. Definitely recommend! Can't wait to go back and tru their hibachi!!

This hole in the wall is a holy grail of sushi. Amazing food and service. Their sushi rice is to die for and the salmon is melt in your mouth. Order to go and sit down. The restaurant itself has a strong incense smell which may deter some, just fyi. I'm telling you this is some of the best sushi in the 757.

Very cozy restaurant, very unassuming from the outside. There were lots of patrons a great sign that this must be the local favorite spot. The servers and staff were very friendly. There was a gentleman talking to customers who seemingly was the manager or owner, sharing the concept behind what they ordered. Food was delicious. I ordered the roll with fried soft shell crab but asked that the fruits be on the side; it came to my table looking delectable and tasting quadruply so. Will definitely come back to try everything. Highly recommended.

As soon as you walk in you are greeted with friendly service. This small but homey sushi house is intimate and cozy with few tables and a small sushi counter. The decor is wonderful with plenty of things to look at! My family and I eat here pretty often and it is always consistent and delicious. Mr Lee always welcomes us and chats with us after our meal, which is nice coming from the owner of this small sushi house. I personally prefer eating nigiri and his cuts of fish are generous. I would consider this a hidden gem of Virginia Beach!

This place is very interesting to say the least. This was my first time here, and I came with a friend for lunch. They have interesting rolls that you don't see at other places. The rolls are a little on the sloppy side and they fall apart but with a good amount of fish. The rolls are shorter than traditional rolls with 5 pieces. The rolls taste very good which definitely helps the falling apart issues. We ordered the rainbow roll, black widow roll, tuna to go.

This Old House Japanese Restaurant first opened in 1995 in the Aragona Village Shoppes complex and has proven its ability to stand the test of time. It is tucked away in a hideaway spot at the tail end of the section that runs parallel to Aragona Boulevard. The El Parian Mexican Restaurant is two doors away, whose space was once the original location of Luna Maya before it moved to Ghent. The storefront presents a worn and humble appearance with windows that appear to be papered up. If wasn't for the Open sign, I might have guessed it had closed. The scent of incense hits your nose as you walk in, which is something I have never encountered before in a Japanese restaurant. It didn't really bother me, and its scent was quickly forgotten once I was seated. The interior presents a warm and cozy feel. Some have mentioned its outdated decor, but I didn't really notice or care. It anything, it added to its character. The old menus I have seen in past photos seem to have worn themselves out of existence. Specialty sushi menus stand on end in plastic holders on each table. The server hands you a long thin paper menu when you are seated, on which you check off the sushi or sashimi items you desire. I saw no mention of the kitchen items from their old menu. Whenever the subject of the best sushi restaurant in the area comes up on Facebook, This Old House always gets a ton of votes from their fierce and loyal followers. This is a family owned restaurant, led by their sushi chef known as Mr. Lee. Friendly and outgoing, he projects a great deal of passion for his craft and bends over backwards to please his customers. His son has also waited on me during some of my visits. My tastes in sushi rolls are very simple and traditional. I prefer the old-fashioned hosomaki style sushi rolls with the seaweed on the outside and without any flashy bling. All I want with my sushi rolls are the usual ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce for dipping. My preferences eliminate most of their specialty rolls, which are prepared uramaki style with the rice on the outside. Fillings such as cream cheese and sauces such as eel sauce and mayonnaise are abundant. Some of their rolls are even topped with various fruits such as mango and strawberries. I have tried the following to date: MISO SOUP: The broth tasted a bit weak in the beginning, but its flavor picked up nicely toward the end. I would have liked a few more pieces of tofu. My Rating: 3.5 Stars. THE TUNA ROLL: Also known as the Tekka Maki Roll, this is a traditional hosomaki style 6-piece sushi roll with the seaweed on the outside. Mr. Lee told me: "I make big rolls", and he wasn't kidding. The pieces were huge, and the seaweed on a couple of pieces snapped loose before I even picked them up. This is usually an indication of excess rice inside the roll and maybe a lapse in craftsmanship. Otherwise, the tuna inside the rolls was very tasty and spoke of high quality. The pieces filled me up nicely. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. THE YELLOWTAIL ROLL: This is another traditional 6-piece roll, one which also included scallions for a nice bit of crunch. Once again, the pieces were packed with rice, and the seaweed came loose on a couple of them. Otherwise, the roll was tasty and filling: My Rating: 4.5 Stars. SPICY TUNA COCKTAIL: This dish comes in two versions, one which includes Sriracha mayo and the other with a ponzu vinegar sauce. If I heard correctly, the mayo could not be separated from the Sriracha. Since I am allergic to mayonnaise, I had to go with the ponzu version. The tuna was presented in cubes drenched in a ponzu sauce that presented a thin watery texture with little depth of flavor and no spice. Otherwise, the tuna tasted fine. My Rating: 3 Stars. ASSORTED NIGIRI: I chose three pieces, which included Salmon Belly, Spanish Mackerel, and Yellowtail. Each one was flavorful and well formed with no complaints: My Rating: 5 Stars. BLACK NATTO ROLL: This is an off menu roll with fermented soybeans as its filling. Mr. Lee serves a Black Natto version made with black soybeans, which he cited as superior in quality to the yellow soybean version. He spoke very highly of its healthy probiotic benefits. The beans were full of their fermented funky flavor. Some of them broke loose from the seaweed that held them, which could be partially due to the larger size of the black soybeans. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. BLACK NATTO BOWL: Black Natto is also available as a donburi style bowl dish as well. Mr. Lee whipped up a version that included fermented black soybeans over sushi rice with avocado and wasabi, topped with pieces of tuna and salmon sashimi. It was profoundly satisfying. My Rating: 5 Stars. When I averaged out the food numbers, I came up with a 4.3 star rating, which was not quite enough to round up yet to a full 5 stars. My work here is by no means over. I will be dropping in from time to time, and hopefully an upgrade to a 5 star rating will be in its future.

Somehow, I didn't know that This Old House was located where it was - I drive past it very frequently! However, my sister's partner recommended it to us one night and we all went for it. In this hidden gem, you will find fresh, delicious seafood in the form of sashimi, sushi, and sushi rolls, and hearty entrées full of tender meats, rice, and noodles. The inside of the restaurant is very cozy and makes you feel relaxed. The staff here is very friendly and talkative. They make you comfortable and were willing to customize different rolls to our any whim !! After deliberation, I decided on some regular salmon sushi, just to get a feel of the quality of their seafood. My sister and her partner both got a plate of Chicken Teriyaki with white rice. For beverages, they have Ramune Japanese Marble Soda (ラムネ)!! I had to snag one of those too. I got the orange flavor, and my sister's bf the green apple. So yummy! The salmon may be some of the best I've had. It was so fresh, with such delectable flavor and texture - it practically melted in my mouth. The sushi rice was also perfectly flavored. They loved the Chicken Teriyaki! The sauce was delicious and the meat was tender, cooked superbly. It makes for a very hearty, warming dish on a cold night. Will definitely be back for some of their specialty rolls and more of that delicious salmon!! I'll have to bring my boyfriend, the sushi fanatic this time. Now that was some quality food !!!

This Old House Japanese Restaurant

This Old House Japanese Restaurant in Virginia Beach is where tradition meets taste, serving up beloved Japanese dishes in a cozy, laid-back setting at 309 Aragona Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. If you're searching for a local spot that feels both nostalgic and authentic, this might just be your new favorite.

A beloved Japanese restaurant in Virginia Beach with local charm

Step into This Old House Japanese Restaurant and you're stepping into a place that locals consider a hidden gem. Nestled quietly off the bustling Aragona Boulevard, the restaurant doesn’t try to impress with flashy signs or modern decor — it impresses where it counts: in the flavor and authenticity of its food.

If you’ve lived in Virginia Beach long enough, chances are someone has whispered to you about “this little Japanese place near Town Center.” That’s how you know it’s real. Regulars often share how the spot brings back memories of first sushi dates, family dinners, or post-surf meals. There's an almost unspoken community bond formed around the miso soup, warm rice bowls, and lovingly rolled sushi.

Whether you’re ordering a comforting bowl of ramen or the melt-in-your-mouth salmon sashimi, every dish shows the care of someone who knows their way around traditional recipes. And unlike many trendy sushi spots that focus more on looks than substance, This Old House keeps it classic — and does it exceptionally well.

Traditional flavors and heartfelt hospitality come together

What sets this place apart isn’t just the food — it’s the experience. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted like family. The small team here seems to remember every face and every order. Whether it’s your second visit or your hundredth, the energy feels familiar and warm.

A customer once told us how she brought her father — a retired Navy officer who spent years stationed in Japan — to dine here. After just one bite of the gyoza, he paused and smiled. “It tastes like Tokyo,” he said. It’s these kinds of reactions that remind you why Japanese comfort food matters — it travels across time and memory.

Don’t miss the bento lunch boxes, either. These meals, packed with balance and variety, have become popular with nearby office workers and families alike. There’s a certain ritualistic joy in lifting the lid to discover perfectly portioned rice, grilled fish, pickled vegetables, and a crispy tempura surprise.

A go-to spot near Town Center with loyal fans and consistent reviews

The location at 309 Aragona Blvd isn’t flashy, but it’s central. Just a few minutes away from the Virginia Beach Town Center, it’s easy to access yet tucked away from the usual crowd. There’s plenty of parking and a kind of relaxed rhythm to this place that makes you want to linger a bit longer after the meal ends.

Many reviews mention how this is the kind of restaurant you return to — not because of a trend, but because it feels like home. People rave about the consistent quality, generous portions, and how it never feels rushed. It’s not uncommon to see the same diners week after week, ordering their usuals. That says a lot.

The menu includes familiar favorites like chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura, and a full selection of sushi rolls, but it also features more comforting Japanese dishes like udon and katsu curry. Each plate is prepared with care, and you can taste that in every bite.

More than just a meal — a dependable dining experience

This Old House isn’t trying to reinvent Japanese cuisine — it’s preserving it. In a time when so many restaurants pivot to fusion or gimmick, it’s refreshing to have a spot that remains grounded in Japanese tradition. The quiet confidence of the dishes speaks volumes.

Families celebrate birthdays here. Couples share their favorite maki rolls. Solo diners sit at the counter, sipping green tea and chatting softly with the staff. It’s not just dinner — it’s a dependable, genuine dining experience that locals protect like a well-kept secret.

If you're near Virginia Beach and crave honest, soul-warming Japanese food in a place that feels like it’s been part of the neighborhood forever, then This Old House Japanese Restaurant deserves your visit. It’s not just about what's on the plate — it’s about how it makes you feel. That, more than anything, is why people keep coming back.

This Old House Japanese Restaurant is more than a place to eat — it's a local tradition still going strong.
